4 Stars - Good
Since October is the month for horror I've decided to take a look at the films and TV shows based on the books of the master of horror fiction Stephen King. I intend to review a different Stephen King film or Tv Show every day this month; and where better to start than his first book and first film, Carrie?
Carries tells the story of a young girl who is bullied at school and abused at home by her psychotic religious mother. She's also has telekinesis. She believes her luck has turned when she is invited to the prom, but due to a mean spirited prank everything will go to hell.
This film is fairly iconic and I can see why, it's simple yet effective. The performances are all pretty solid, especially from Sissy Spaceck as Carrie who makes her character really sympathetic so that you feel like her actions at the end are justified.
That said there are times when this film really shows its age, with unusual editing techniques and a soundtrack that just doesn't know what it wants to do, scare us or amuse us.
As an adaptation of the book this is spot on, with very little changed, taken away or added. I don't think you could ask for a much better adaptation.
