The Best 10 Films of 2012

Here are the films I liked the most in 2012 and once again this is opinion based, so feel free to disagree... just know that I'm right...

Honourable Mentions: The Girl, a magnificent made for TV film, definitely one to look out for.
Superman Vs. The Elite, a great animated superhero film.

Elephant in the Room: The Dark Knight Rises, this was coming nowhere near my top 10 list, because I don't think it's that good, despite how everyone else raves about it.

10. The Woman In Black

Splendidly spooky horror story that was just dripping with atmosphere, I had to go see the Muppets right after to cheer myself up again...

9. Moonrise Kingdom

Quirky Comedy about a boy and a girl who run away together. Brilliantly funny and filled with a lot of heart.

8. The Raid

Magnificent action film with a hugely simple plot. The fight scenes have to be seen to be believed.

7. Looper

Intelligent Sci-Fi with wonderful characters and mounting tension that's hard to top.

6. Killer Joe

Dark, disturbing and wonderful. You'll never, ever forget the KFC scene.

5. Seven Psychopaths

Hilariously dark and full of some absolutely top-notch performances. Martin McDonagh continues to deliver.

4. The Pirates! In An Adventure With Scientists!

Splendidly British animated comedy. Every joke hits and the characters are quite likable too.

3. Prometheus

Mysterious, interesting and scary. Could be retitled, 'dude, don't touch that...'

2. Paranorman

The biggest surprise on my list, I love every second of this. It's clever, funny and really struck an emotional chord with me.

1. Shame

Film about the life of a sex addict, with one of the best performances of Michael Fassbender's career. Definitely the best film of 2012.

The Worst 10 films of 2012

So these are the films I hated the most in 2012, obviously this list is opinion based, so if you disagree, well tough.

Dishonourable Mention: Keith Lemon: The Film, I didn't see this film, but if I had it would undoubtedly be the worst film of 2012

10. The Bourne Legacy

This follow up to Bourne ruined the franchise by giving us a wholly unlikable protagonist and a boring plot.

9. This Means War

Entirely awful film about two spies fighting over a woman. Comedies should be funny, and this wasn't.

8. Frankenweenie

Unpleasant animated film about a dog who gets brought back to life. I just found this film to look dirty, feel really nasty and have no likeable or memorable characters.

7. Total Recall

Unnecessary remake of the Arnold classic. Just so much bland, topped off with more bland, and the first, Bryan Cranston face palm of the list.

6. Red Tails

Laughably awful war film. Everything in this film sucked, and the second Bryan Cranston face palm on the list.

5. Savages

Dreadfully boring cartel film that didn't even have the guts to do the ending right and as such did a Clue style cop-out.

4. Top Cat

What did they do to you TC? This film hurts my childhood.

3. The Dictator

So a mainstream comedy that isn't funny and is just downright ugly.

2. Dark Shadows

Further proof that Johnny Depp and Tim Burton should stop working together. This film just sucks in every aspect.

1. Hotel Transylvania

So many wasted ideas, so many poorly animated segments, so many characters I hated, so much Adam Sandler. Also Dracula. Does. Not. Rap. The worst film of 2012 hands down.

The 5 Best and Worst Stephen King Adaptations

Consider this something of an epilogue to Stephen King Month if you like, I've seen some shockingly bad films in my foolhardy theme month, but some good ones too, so here's the cream of the crop. Bare in mind this is just out of the 31 I reviewed for Stephen King Month.

I'll start with my least favourite, because that just makes sense to me...

5. It
This is pretty awful, However I mainly include it on the list because of the sheer number of people who say they are scared of it. It isn't remotely scary. The only point in its favour is that it gets Tim Curry points.

4. The Tommyknockers
The perfect example of the bad Stephen King miniseries, three long hours of bad acting, 90s special effects and lousy scripts.

3. Salem's Lot (2004)
I guess they at least tried with this one, but the updated modern setting and changes they made to the characters, especially Father Callahan, kind of ruined it.

2. Firestarter
This one just sucks plain and simple, bad acting, bad writing, bad effects. Hell it made a film with George C. Scott and Martin Sheen as villains boring.

1. The Stand
While this is probably technically better than Firestarter, this one pissed me off a lot more because the book is so good. Also it is six hours long, which is just horrific to sit through.

Now onto my favourite. Bare in mind some I like more might not be technically as good...

5. Apt Pupil/Needful Things
So I'm cheating and doing two here, but I wanted to include my favourite new discovery (Apt Pupil) and my favourite book (Needful Things)

4. The Shawshank Redemption
If I didn't include this I'd feel wrong. Truly the most iconic film on this list. Everyone loves it and it is easy to see why.

3. The Shining (1980)
A bit of a masterpiece, with wonderful acting, cinematography and scary noise.

2. The Green Mile
Quite possibly the most accurate adaptation of a book I've ever seen, Magnificent in every way.

1. Misery
That wonderful rarity of an adaptation that surpasses the source material. My favourite Stephen King film.

Pixar Films - best and worst - at this point - till I change my mind

The studio with the little lamp have made some of the best family films of all time, and these are my favourites of them from least favourite to favourite.

13 - Ratatouille
I Know a lot of people like it, I just didn't and don't even know why.

12 - Cars
Not a bad film, but not a great one either, just kind of meh.

11 - Cars 2
A lot more inventive than Cars due to the spy cars and such.

10 - A Bug's Life
Any film company that can have put out a film as fun as Bug's Life as it's 10th best out of 13 must be doing something right.

9 - Brave
Fairy Tale Fun

8 - Finding Nemo
Who doesn't like this film? Filled with all kinds of memorable characters and jokes.

7 - Toy Story 2
A Sequel to one of the best films ever... of course its not quite as good, but that doesn't stop it being excellent.

6 - Toy Story 3
I have my own issues with Toy Story 3 being too depressing, but still I love it.

5 - Monsters, Inc.
Hell of a lot of fun, with some of the most creative monster designs you'll ever see.

4 - The Incredibles
Basically a family friendly version of Watchmen/The Dark Knight Returns, and really bloody good.

3 - Toy Story
The Original and always the best of the Toy Story films, and filled with huge nostalgic value.

 2 - Up
A magnificent adventure story with loveable characters, good comedy and a better love story in 5 minutes than most romance films manage in two hours.

1 - WALL-E
A love story with robots and no dialogue outside of occasional words from the guy who voiced R2D2, then a cool sci-fi world with an environmental message that makes sense and feels natural to the plot? Damn this film is great.
